As BC’s Northernmost Winery
Northern Lights Estate Winery Enjoys a Unique Vantage Point.
In 2013, the Bell family recognized a wonderful opportunity to share the beautiful Nechako riverfront in a new and delicious way! They could see the time was ripe for creating an inviting social space just a stone’s throw from downtown Prince George; producing award-winning red, white, and specialty fruit wines; and opening an architecturally stunning restaurant. The Bells assembled a team of passionate, talented growers, winemakers, and hospitality experts to help them realize their vision.

Northern Lights Estate Winery (NLEW) started construction in 2013 with the Winery scheduled to open in early summer of 2015. In only two years the land was logged and crops planted. In 2015 we built the winery that houses the bottling area, the wine fermentation area and the wine tasting and retail area. We will continue to develop the land, expand the growing area, and enhance the beauty of the amphitheater. The winery continues to grow in volume and services including the addition of Prince George’s first restaurant on the river in 2017.
Northern Lights Estate Winery is proud to be a certified Carbon Neutral business by purchasing carbon credits to offset its environmental impact. The winery purchased offsets via “offsetters.ca” for scope 1 and 2 of its direct emissions as seen below
Global wine consumption is approximately 32 billion, 750 milliliter bottles annually, making the environmental impact of wine consumption very significant (Mercer 2016). While NLEW is only creating a small portion of the total bottles of wine being sold world-wide, they bare a share of the impact of the entire industry. Producing all those wine bottles has a significant impact, both through the process of gathering materials and the manufacturing stage. NLEW ordered 60,000 bottles last year, generating 22.5 tonnes of CO2e through their production.
Shipping – Wine Bottles
NLEW had 60,000 bottles shipped from China last year; they travelled about 8,000 kilometers (5,000 miles) by ship to a port in Vancouver, then travelled nearly 800 kilometers (500 miles) by truck to the winery. About 40,000 bottles were filled with wine last year, then distributed throughout Prince George, as well as to liquor depots in Summerland and Victoria. To calculate the emissions from shipping the wine bottles, both the distance travelled and the weight of the bottles are taken into account. The total emissions generated by shipping wine bottles for NLEW is 17.9 tonnes of CO2e.
Shipping – Fruit
NLEW tries to grow as much fruit as possible on site for creating its wines; however, it is necessary to source some fruit from farms across BC. The fruit is trucked to the winery and stored in a freezer until it is made into wine. Similar to shipping the wine bottles, both the distance travelled and the weight of the fruit is taken into account when calculating the emissions of shipping the fruit. The total emissions generated by shipping the fruit for NLEW’s wine is 1.2 tonnes of CO2e.
